    Hernia

Hernia could be described as a condition which occurs when an organ or a fatty tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or tissue in which it usually resides. Abdominal Hernia is the most common type of Hernia.
According to experts for Hernia surgery in Dubai, Hernia is caused by a combination of strain and weakness in muscles. The strain pushes an organ through the weak spot in the wall of the cavity. The weakness in the muscles could be present from birth or could be developed with age.

Any factors that put strain on the muscles can cause Hernia, if there is weakness in muscles and include

    • Pregnancy
    • Constipation
    • Incessant Coughing
    • Heavy Weight Lifting
    • Increase in Weight
    • Smoking
    • Malnutrition

    Types of Hernia

    • Abdominal Hernia: The abdominal wall is a tough sheet of muscles and tendons that run between groin and ribs. Sometimes due to the development of weak spots in the abdominal wall, contents of the abdominal cavity protrude and develop a swelling known as Abdominal Hernia.

    • Inguinal Hernia: It is the most common type of hernia and is mostly found in men. Due to a natural weakness in abdominal wall, the intestines or bladder protrude through it and into the inguinal canal in the groin.

    • Incisional Hernia: This occurs due to the complications after abdominal surgery. After a surgeon cuts through abdominal muscles to operate in the abdominal cavity, the area usually heals but weak spots remain in there. The intestines may push through the incision scar or weakened tissues.

    • Diaphragmatic Hernia: It is a birth defect due to which there is an opening in the diaphragm. This opening allows the abdominal organs to move into the chest cavity near lungs.

Women are highly susceptible to developing hernia during and after pregnancy. Muscles tend to stretch, thin and weaken during pregnancy caused by increased pressure in the abdominal region due to a growing baby in the uterus. There are two types of abdominal hernia that affect pregnant women.

Umbilical Hernia occurs at the belly button, where the small opening is stretched due to pressure. Women experience tenderness with pain in the region.

Inguinal Hernia occurs as a growing baby puts more pressure on the weakened abdominal wall, causing bulge in the scrotum or groin with a burning sensation.

Abdominal Hernia should not be ignored and needs to be treated after delivery through surgery. Ventral hernia surgery is used to repair the herniated area but it does not take care of the tissue or fat of the abdomen. For that, Abdominoplasty, a cosmetic treatment, is used. But, they are often used together, as both are performed in the lower abdomen and address common issues. Also, as the muscles are left in a fragile state post delivery, it is advised that Hernia Repair Surgery in Dubai is followed with abdominoplasty, to stabilize the abdominal wall and firm up the covering skin and tissues.

Laparoscopic Hernia Repair has fast emerged as a preferred mode of hernia surgery in Dubai for treatment of abdominal hernia in men. Few small incisions are made in the abdominal area, through which the surgeon performs the operation. The major benefits of the laparoscopic surgery are

    • Incisions made are relatively small; making it a painless technique. No Scarring after surgery.

    • Very effective in treating hernia in the groin region.

    • As mesh is used for reinforcement, there is less chance of the hernia recurring.

    • Short recovery time

    New concepts in hernia repair

RAW (reconstruction of abdominal wall)– Previously, abdominal wall defects were taken care of by general surgeons but due to increasing complexity of abdominal wall defects, expertise of Plastic (Cosmetic) Surgeons is being sought. Surgical techniques are evolving to focus on restoration of abdominal wall function alongwith structure as well. Reconstruction of Abdominal wall with mobilization of autologous tissues has evolved as a reliable option for patients with incisional hernias.

Large ventral and incisional hernia – are caused due to incompletely healed surgical wounds and have a high recurrence rate is repaired with a simple suture technique. The new tension-free method being used involves the sewing of surgical mesh patches well beyond the edges of the weakened area of the abdominal wall using laparoscopic incisional hernia repair. As the area heals, the mesh becomes firmly integrated into the inner abdominal wall membrane eliminating any change of relapse.

Component Separation technique: – provides tensionless closure of large, full thickness frontal abdominal hernia with autologous tissues, made from prosthetic materials. It is now, being used for treatment of large ventral hernias and intractable abdominal hernia. Advantages of this technique are: –

    • Restore structural and functional integrity of the abdominal wall.
    • Provides stable soft tissue coverage.
    • Optimizes aesthetic appearance.
