Parastomal Hernia

What is a parastomal Hernia?
Patient may have an ileostomy or colostomy for various reasons. It can be temporary or permanent. Ostomy is a condition when the part of the small intestine or the large intestine is brought forward on the abdominal wall and the content of the alimentary tract drain out through the stoma. Now, in some cases, with due course of time, the hole that is created for the ostomy enlarges and other contents of the abdomen specially the small bowel starts protruding out through the same hole. These can create a bulge in the area where the stoma is created and interfere with the application of the appliance or the stoma bag. It can also lead to development of intestinal obstruction at times.

Repair of a parastomal hernia has significant challenges. One, the stoma has to be maintained and only the surrounding tissue has to be repaired. The placement of the mesh in the area is difficult as the mesh can sometimes erode into the bowel. Secondly, the area is considered as contaminated because there is efflux of stools from the stoma. So there is a higher possibility of an infection.
